Script shona natalie

Script for Simon Casken posing as a BNP Supporter/Member.

Interviewer: How do you feel Barnsley has accepted your party?
BNP: We have alot of positive feedback from the people of Barnsley and the figures from the most recent local elections speak for themselves.

I: Your Party has caused alot of controversy in the media as well as within Barnsley itself what do you think about the Anti-BNP protests?

B: Thers always opposing views to every party, our views are obviously what barnsley want, despite objections fro the minority.

I: Do you feel it is the older or the younger generation that believe in you policies most?

B: We seem to have a varied age range but the majority of our members are people who've lived in Barnsley their wole life and don't want to see it change.

I: Your Party has been reported as a radical one and also gained the name The Nazi party. What do you feel about these comments?

B: We should not be associated with the term 'Nazi'. We are the only party with the guts to stand up for this country instead of being too politically correct, we are going against the other parties, whats so wrong with british jobs for british people.

I: Do you inform people of the fact you support and are an active member of the British National Party?

B: If politics is part of the converation i will proudly admit that i am a suporting member of the British National Party. But if you first meet a person would you really ask them what party they support anyway? My party does not define who i am it is merely my beliefs.

I: Your party has been named racist, how do you respond to this?

B: This country is predominantly caucasian white, it is my personal belief that it should stay that way to keep Britain britsh.

research continued group

we decided to look at the unite against fascism website before we interviewed George Arthur so that we would be more informed on the subject matter.

Research group

We looked on the BNP Bansley branch's website in order to gain more knowledge on the party. Whilst on the website we came across a petition to remove George Arthur on e of our pivotal characters in our documentary from teaching due to his opposing views

difficulties faced group

during our time filming we faced a few difficulties these included getting the white balance right on the HDV1000. This created a bluey tinge to some of our shots, we could have avoided this by resetting the white balance manually.
When using the zoom recorder we were sometimes too far away from our subject and the sound was still interupted by traffic and wind.

Equipment shona

We are using in our second year of media A level a more advanced camera, the HDV1000, this camera produces a better quality image and sound.

We used a zoom recorder which is a hand held sound recorder in order to gain clearer sound whilst outdoors, if we relied solely on the cameras recording device the sound can be interrupted by noises such as the wind and traffic

A tripod and studio lights were also used in order to improve the quality of the image a tripod steadied the camera and enabled a less shakey video and the lighting improved on the natural light in the rooms

Hi George,
Sorry for the delay in my reply, would it be possible to arrange an interview for this thursday 12th we would wish to conduct this interview in the town centre and it would take a minimum of half an hour, If it would be possible to meet around 2o'clock please let me know if this isn't suitable as we are able to work around you.

I was also wondering if you could keep me updated on any upcoming protests that could be filmed to be part of our programme.
Thanks for your help

Hi Shona,

Nice to hear from you. Yes I am keen to support your project. I am away all half term week.

I will be back in Barnsley from 2nd Nov. I am usually available at times during the day on a Monday, Thursday and Friday. Thursday 5th is a day of strike at Barnsley College so I shall be involved in various support activities for the lecturers on that day but other wise I am generally free that week on Mon and all three days the week beginning 9th Nov.

Let me know what times you would be wanting to meet up on any of those days and I'll put it in my diary. Let me know how long you will want to take as well.

All the best to you,

George

Hi George,
I dont know if you remember but i approached you in town last week about a documentary about the BNP's rise within Barnsley we are making as part of our A level media project. I was wondering if you are still interested in appearing on camera in order to give your opinions on the subject, as we spoke about at the time you would not be in a situation with a member of the BNP or in a debate style situation. If you could contact me with times and dates when is appropriate for you to meet with us.
Much appreciated
Shona Easton

Questionnaire results shona

This graph showing the results of our questionnaire gives us an insight into our target audience, it showed that the majority of people would prefer to watch a documentary of this style on Channel 4, this helps us decide where to broadcast our program. We also found the results that the majority of people who would be interested in watching this program would be 18-25 year olds, we can adapt our program so that it would appeal more to people of this age range by doing things such as interviewing people of this age group.

Statistics and Facts natalie

Statistics and facts to be included in our documentary.

· ‘Barnsley has always been an old fashioned Yorkshire town. People have never had foreigners living next to them it’s a backlash.’
As reported by the Times website on the recent increase of votes for the BNP
· Young people’s attitudes are still reflective of the views of the older generations.
· ‘All or mates wanted to vote. Get ‘em out. Foreigners. There dangerous. Their too horrible.’
Quote from a young person on the BNP as taken from the newspaper The Times.
· There’s been a rise in ANTI-BNP protesters in Barnsley with leaflets and posters circulating with quotes such as ‘vote anyone but Nazi.’ Also ‘reclaim our town for democrats’ campaign held two rallies in town centre, in response to the BNP having regular presence outside the Alhambra shopping centre, for the past few years on a Saturday.
· BNP gained the highest percentage of the vote in Barnsley.

Treatment group

Title: BNP, Barnsley’s new party?

Audience: The documentary is aimed at people who have an interest in politics or current affairs. Mainly people who are over the age of 18 will watch this programme as this is the voting age.

Duration: Our programme will be an hour long documentary, this is the average time documentaries last and will be the right amount of time in order to portray a balanced side of the debate as well as shots of the town and protests.

Channel: The Channel that is most suited for broadcasting Channel4 we discovered its suitablity by looking at the channels statement of promises online, the channel promises to show programmes which discuss current affairs it also promises to show thought provoking programmes as well as promoting individual film makers.

Features: Our programme will include unique features such as voice pop’s where the narrators voice is laid over the film, so the narrator is invisible. We also are having the interviews done by an unseen interviewer.

Synopsis: After this year’s local elections the BNP recorded its highest amount of votes ever, the town of Barnsley had the highest percentage of the vote with one in every six people voting for the for the BNP. The party has anti gay, anti black policies which make them the most controversial political party at the moment. The current chairman is Nick Griffin. This programme aims to portray the town of Barnsley illustrating the views of the people of the area both for and against the party. alot of bad press have come about barnsley due to the fact they voted very highly for the BNP. We aim to convey both parties including the anti fascism movement. In our documentary we hope to begin with establishing shots of barnsley with a voxpop narrator reading facts and figures, we will also face to face itnerviews with members of the public and official people as well as protest footage.

brief planning group

For this media project we are going to film a documentary on the BNP. We are going to try and include interviews with current members of the BNP so they can get there opinions across. We are also going to interview different members of the public to see what their view are on this political party, see whether they agree or disagree on these particular views. The reason for making this programme is the dramatic increase in the popularity of the party in the local area of Barnsley.
The Channel that is most suited for broadcasting Channel4 we discovered its suitablity by looking at the channels statement of promises online, the channel promises to show programmes which discuss current affairs it also promises to show thought provoking programmes as well as promoting individual film makers. A similair programme to ours which is currently being shown on this channel is ‘Dispatches’ which is a similair syle documentary which deals with political and current issues.
The broadcast time for this documentary would be an hour long slot on channel four at nine o’clock. This time is after watershed yet is not too late, most documentaries are shown around this time. However the other channel’s programming schedule would have to be checked as if there are two political documentaries on at the same time you are practically halfing your viewing figures.
We also felt that as this was a documentary about the BNP and politics that our target audience would be anyone really who was interested in politics but mostly directed at the people who are of legal age to vote as they may be interesting in the issues that are brought up in this documentary, so this is 18 plus there isnt really any limit to the age the target audience could possibly be.

channel 4 logo shauni

channel to be shown on

http://www.channel4.com/about_c4/promises_2001/promises_intro2.html

This is channnel4s statement of promises which we felt made it most appropriate to broadcast our documentary on. The fact that it promises to show current affairs programmes that are both innovative and thought provoking meant we felt our programme was best shown here.
